Methodology
We score every ranking on this site against the same public rubric. We publish it so you can check how a placement was earned.
Rubric max: 100 points. The ceiling is a 5-point anchor scale across 5 weighted categories. The current highest score is 82. A 5 on any criterion requires independently corroborated evidence. Company marketing and subject interviews stop at 4. Every firm in the index has at least one gap.
Scoring criteria
Track Record
25 ptsYears operating, plus independently verifiable evidence of outcomes (case studies, disclosed client counts, exits/IPOs), or a founder's own verifiable operating or exit history where the practice itself is new. We rate it 0-5 against fixed anchors, then convert that rating to weighted points.
Segment Fit / ICP Clarity
25 ptsThe score measures the precision of the firm's stated ideal client. Match to any one buyer is a separate question. A hard eligibility gate (e.g. "funded Delaware C-Corp only") scores as a well-defined fit even when the niche is narrow. This is the score on the general, whole-market page. Fit on a specific industry, stage, location, or profile page is scored and sourced separately.
Pricing Transparency
15 ptsA firm scores highest when it publishes its own price for the executive seat, in the middle when it publishes a market range that names itself or an adjacent service price, and lowest when the firm requires a scoping call and publishes no number.
Responsiveness & Access
20 ptsThe score reflects how a client reaches the senior executive who does the work. A solo practitioner scores highest by default, then a named lead backed by a team, then a boutique team, then a pooled bench or marketplace match. We do not award an automatic maximum for solo status alone. Documented cadence and continuity count too.
Credentials
15 ptsNamed, relevant qualifications (CPA/CFA, Big-4, prior operating roles), and the consistency of that bar across engagements. A marketplace model scores lower here because quality depends on who you are matched with.
Notes
- We rate every sub-score on a fixed 0-5 anchor scale (0 = no usable evidence, 5 = independently corroborated, above first-party evidence alone) and then convert it to weighted points. We publish the anchors so you can check the work.
- No firm hits 100. That follows from the evidence bar: every claim has to clear it. Company marketing, client testimonials, directories, and subject interviews count as first-party evidence. They are not independent verification, so they can carry a score only so far.
- Segment Fit is page-relative: the same firm can score differently on its strongest industry, stage, or location page than on the general market-wide page.
- Every firm's score carries an evidence-confidence rating and a stated main limitation. Both appear on the firm profile.
- A 1-3 point gap between two firms is not a proven service-quality difference. Ranks move when the rubric or the fit judgment changes, and we did not contact any firm listed here as part of this review.
- We re-review scores and placements on a rolling basis. Each page's changelog shows the last verification date.
